Studio Anne Carlton - The Celtic Chessmen Chess Pieces Set  (SAC-CELT)

The Celtic Chessmen - Hand Decorated
by Studio Anne Carlton

The Celtic people were inhabitants of areas of Western Europe, particularly Ireland, Wales, Brittany and the Highlands of Scotland. They were subjected to raids by Vikings and Norsemen and our chess set is the story of a battle between the Irish King, Brian Boru, and the Viking invaders. The battle took place at Clontarf, near Dublin and was a fierce encounter.

Although the Celts managed to defeat the Viking invaders, their King, Brian Boru, was slain. This chess set features the principal characters involved in the battle and depicts Celtic designs and artifacts of the period.

Almost one thousand years old the Celtic inhabitants of Ireland rose up under their King, Brian Boru, to fight the invading and colonizing Vikings. Based on the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 AD, our chess set portrays many of the characteristics of the era with authentic and historically correct artifacts shown in splendid detail. The skill and workmanship of the Celtic tribes was demonstrated by their artistic and unique designs, recognized throughout the world and reproduced here in this magnificent chess set.  Studio Anne Carlton - The Canterbury Chessmen Chess Pieces Set  (SAC-CANT)

The Canterbury Chessmen - Hand Decorated
by Studio Anne Carlton

The city of Canterbury has been a place of Christian worship for nearly two thousand years. Following a major fire at the original cathedral in 1174, the monks at Canterbury used the revenue from the many pilgrims visiting the shrine and relics of St Thomas to create the first Gothic cathedral in England . The rebuilding and reconstruction continued during the following century and ensured that at the end of the Middle Ages, Canterbury Cathedral was one of the noblest churches in Christendom.

The skilled designers and sculptors have created from the architecture and statuary in and around Canterbury Cathedral a chess set of gracious proportions and great detail. Chess board not included.

Studio Anne Carlton - The Crusades Chessmen Chess Pieces Set  (SAC-CRUSA)

The Crusades Chessmen - Hand Decorated
by Studio Anne Carlton

This is a magnificent chess set which epitomizes the struggles for domination between Christians and Muslims. This conflict has continued intermittently for over a thousand years, but it is the period between 1095 and 1292 which has captured our imagination because of the exploits of the Crusader knights.

Skillfully hand decorated, these pieces represent the Christian side led by King Richard I of England, known as Richard the Lionheart, in combat with the Muslim armies led by Saladin. This chess set concentrates particularly on the Third great Crusade led by King Richard I of England, who in 1189 joined King Philip II of France in an effort to recapture the holy city of Jerusalem. King Richard, with 8000 troops, seized Cyprus and some cities on the Palestinian coast, but ultimately failed to dislodge the Muslim leader, Saladin, from Jerusalem. Chess board not included.

Studio Anne Carlton - The History of Golf Chessmen Chess Pieces Set  (SAC-GOLF)

The History of Golf Chessmen - Hand Decorated
by Studio Anne Carlton

There is no other sport as richly endowed with outstanding characters, incidents and locations as that of golf. Our designers have drawn on the rich history of the game to suggest individuals and places that have played an important part in the refinement of golf from what was a mediaeval peasants' pastime to the game we know and love today.

Golf's growing popularity really stems from the inauguration of the Open Championship in 1860 and it is from this era to the early 1900s that our designers have chosen to represent the true beginnings of the sport. They have chosen Harry Vardon as King, Lady Margaret Scott as the Queen and Old Tom Morris as the Bishop.

Beautifully hand decorated, this set is a delight to own and makes a remarkable presentation piece. Chess Board not included.

The Nautical Chessmen - Hand Decorated
by Studio Anne Carlton

Since time began, countless men have fought battles with the oceans and seas of the world to try and master the incredible power of these vast bodies of water. The contest has always been unequal for the tempestuous seas are far more powerful than man or anything man made. So how has man been able to survive and flourish in such a hostile environment? By skill, bravery, cunning and a little luck.

It is this line of thought that led our designers to create a chess set featuring elements of the Ocean and man's constant quest to tame the rolling waves, the shrieking storms. Using all his experience, knowledge and seamanship, man has taken much of the uncertainty out of voyaging the oceans, but can he claim to have beaten it? Our chess set characters symbolize the relationship that man has with the sea. Chess board not included.
